NAHB Reports Rise In Sales In November


Sales of new single-family homes increased 4.4 percent in November to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 377,000 units, according to figures released today by HUD and the U.S. Census Bureau. It was the highest monthly total since April 2010 when the federal home buyer tax credit expired.

EACOM Timber Corporation Board Announces Completion Of Elk Lake Upgrades


EACOM Timber Corporation (ETR: TSX-V) (“EACOM”, or the “Company”) has announced that the Board has approved entering into an agreement with USNRKockums Cancar Inc.,(“USNR”) to rebuild the Timmins Mill.  The total cost of the project is estimated at $25 million, a substantial portion of which is being funded from proceeds of insurance related to a fire. As reported in January of this year, the mill located in Timmins Ontario was destroyed by fire.  To date the Company has received $23,700,000 of insurance proceeds, $13,700,000 related to business interruption and $10,000,000 for damage or destruction of assets.


The New EU Timber Regulation Begins From March 2013


As of next March, weeding out illegal timber from the EU will be the responsibility of the European forest owner as seller or the company importing timber in the EU, as Finnish Forest Association said in the press release received by Lesprom Network.

FRA Reports Increased Lumber Exports


Forestry Research Associates (FRA) has reported from a forestry market analyst claiming that Chinese demand for Canadian timber will increase in 2013. 

British Columbia, one of the main timber growing regions in Canada, exported a total of 5.4 million cubic metres of softwood lumber in the first nine months of the year. Although this was a slight decline on the exports in the same period of 2011, Mark Kennedy of CIBC World Markets claims this is all to change.

Meanwhile, permits for new construction rose to their strongest level in more than four years, with a 3.6 percent gain to 899,000 units.

UPM Sells Forest Land To Taaleritehdas


UPM and Taaleritehdas have agreed on the sale of 6,000 hectares of forest land. The estates are located in Central and Eastern Finland in Pyhäntä, Utajärvi, Kiuruvesi and Ilomantsi. At the same time the parties have signed an agreement on wood trade and forest services. It has been agreed by the parties not to disclose the purchase price.

NAHB Reports Builders Confidence In December


Builder confidence in the market for newly built, single-family homes rose for an eighth consecutive month in December to a level of 47 on the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI). This marked a two-point gain from a slightly revised November reading, and the highest level the index has attained since April of 2006.

AHEC Seminar In Bengaluru Is A Success


The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), the international trade association for the American hardwood industry has successfully hosted a ‘Designing & Working with American Hardwoods’ seminar in Bengaluru, India in partnership with the Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID). The seminar was organized in conjunction with the IIID Bangalore Chapter and centered around two key presentations on the range and diversity of the American hardwood forest, sustainable management, production for export, working properties of species and end use applications. The event, which was held at the Le Meridien Hotel in Bengaluru, was attended by over 120 architects, designers and manufacturers and followed an AHEC trade servicing mission to Delhi and Bengaluru.
