GABON: EUROPE MOST IMPORTANT TRADING PARTNER IN 2010

The roundwood-export ban initially planned by Gabon for implementation on 1 January 2010 and finally introduced from the middle of May 2010 resulted in significant changes in Gabonese timber trading. As emerges from the export statistics issued by ATIBT, timber exports have shifted considerably in favour of European buyers in connection with the rise in wood processing within the country.

PEFC TO ENDORSE DUTCH FORESTRY CERTIFICATION

The Dutch National Forest Certification Scheme has been submitted by PEFC Netherlands for assessment as per PEFC International’s Sustainability Benchmarks. PEFC International has invited feedbacks by June 1, 2012 from stakeholders worldwide on its compliance. 

The Dutch scheme was developed by the National PEFC Forum, an independent multi-stakeholder body to which representatives from a wide range of sectors including forest owners and industry, environmental and social organizations, and consumers were invited, over a period of three years.

THE EU'S EMISSIONS REDUCTION TARGET FOR 2020 COULD BE FACING AN UNLIKELY BUT GRAVE OBSTACLE

The EU's emissions reduction target for 2020 could be facing an unlikely but grave obstacle, according to a growing number of scientists, EU officials and NGOs: the contribution of biomass to the EU's renewable energy objectives for 2020.

Around half of the EU's target for providing 20% of energy from renewable sources by 2020 will be made up by biomass energy from sources such as wood, waste and agricultural crops and residues, according to EU member states' national action plans.

SPANISH MEPS HAVE SHOWN THEIR SENSITIVITY TO ISSUES AFFECTING THE WOOD INDUSTRY

A Thanksgiving Day-Action-European timber was organized by the European employers' wood industries CEI-Bois, EPF (boards) and EOS ( sawyers) in Brussels in order to draw the attention of European policy makers about the role of wood in the fight against climate change, an act that marks the beginning of other actions in the European Union. Spain was the country that had a greater representation of MEPs at the conference, four, which was attended on behalf of the Spanish Confederation of Wood (CONFEMADERA) its President and its Secretary-General Francis de Paula Huidobro and Francesc Pons, respectively, and the Secretary General of the National Association of Board Manufacturers (ANFTA), Genoveva Canals.
