MALAYSIAN TIMBER MARKET BECOMES TREND CONSCIOUS


The Malaysian timber exporters now focuses on the emerging trend in the timber market. The government takes steps to ensure development in the timber industry.
 
Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok says, the Malaysian timber exporters have to be conscious of the rising demand in major markets for legal timber and comply to new rules taking appropriate steps. The local timber industry will regularly be kept informed on the latest development in timber trade rules, by the government. This keeps the local timber-based business community at an advantage.

GLOBAL LUMBER INDUSTRY HEADING TOWARDS BETTER FUTURE

Global trade of soft lumber has increased by 25 percent over the past two years after a decline in 2008 and 2009. In 2011, trace reached just over 90 million cu.m., which is still substantially below “pre-financial crises” levels. China, Japan, Spain and South Korea had the biggest rise in import volumes between 2010 and 2011. However, major importers such as  the US, UK, Italy, France and Egypt reduced imports by 5-10 percent every year.

CONIFEX TIMBER REPORTS 1Q NET LOSS OF $6.5 MILLION

Conifex Timber Inc. reported a net loss of $6.5 million or $0.38 per share for the 1Q 2012 compared to a net loss of $7.5 million or $0.49 per share for the 4Q 2011, and a net loss of $3.6 million or $0.24 per share for the 1Q 2011.

STRONG HOLD OF 23RD XYLEXPO

The 23rd Xylexpo, held at FieraMilano-Rho from 8 to 12 May on a total surface of 32,178 net square meters, was a truthful mirror of the current situation: the figures published by the Acimall Studies Office just before the exhibition indicated that, in the first quarter of this year, orders to the Italian industry decreased by 4.6 percent compared to the same period of 2011, whereby a minus 24.8 percent variation on the domestic market was partially balanced by orders from abroad (plus 4.25 percent).

FINNISH FOREST INDUSTRY'S PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT EXPERIENCING TOUGH SITUATION (12.05.2012)

Finland produced 2.6 million tonnes of paper and paperboard in January-March 2012. The Finnish forest industry's production environment was difficult in the 1Q and demand for several product categories was sluggish in the main market areas, as the Finnish Forest Industries Federation (FFIF) said in a press release received by Lesprom Network.

ORDER OF OSB PLANT IN CHINA FOR DIFFENBACHER

Dieffenbacher has received an order for a complete OSB plant in China. This is the second continuous OSB plant that Dieffenbacher will build in China. The first OSB plant for Baoyuan began production in 2010. The new plant which will be located in Eastern China will have an annual capacity of 228,000 m³.

GTTN TO PROMOTE THE USE OF INNOVATIVE CONTROL TOOLS WITH DNA (08.05.2012)

2012 CARREFOUR INTERNATIONAL DU BOIS ALREADY FULLY BOOKED

Three months before its opening, the 2012 Carrefour International du Bois was fully booked, thanks to a growing number of exhibitors (530), an exhibition surface area increase of 10% compared to 2010 and expected visitors of 10 000 (including 15% of international visitors). DEMAND FOR SIBERIAN LARCH LUMBER GREW IN GERMANY

Demand for larch lumber from East Siberia has been growing in Germany since Easter. This is mainly owing to industrial planing mills having stepped up production on account of better sales opportunities for planed timber.


FILL MACHINE ENGINEERING PLANNED TO INVEST 25 MILLION EUROS IN THE GURTEN PLANT

As part of the "Fill 2020" project, the first construction phase commenced in April 2012 alongside the existing Fill premises in Gurten. Urgently needed additional logistics and assembly space will be built here in the next twelve months on an 8,000 m2 site. An extension to the electro-workshop, the machining shop and a new service center will also be accommodated on the expanded, new company site. In total, about 35,000 m3 of earth will be moved in the coming weeks before the first phase begins with construction of the parking area, building site, a new road and the new water overflow and storage basin. "We are investing around € 25 million over the next few years in the Gurten plant. The next phase is scheduled for 2014 with construction of a 2,000 m2 service and training center. This is a clear commitment to our location here in the Innviertel," explain the CEOs Andreas Fill and Wolfgang Rathner.


GHANA NOW SEEKS TO IMPORT TIMBER FROM CAMERON

Ghana is seeking to import timber from Cameroon to feed local processing plants lacking the raw materials to operate fully.

Cameroon contains some of the Congo Basin's most biologically diverse forest - over 300 species - extending over 22 million hectares. The country is a main tropical timber exporter, 80 percent of which is shipped to the European Union.

EU TIMBER REGULATION TO BECOME OPERATIONAL ON MARCH 3, 2013

The EU Timber Regulation becomes operational on 3 March 2013. From March 3, 2013 onwards, market players in the EU are officially prohibited from putting illegally felled timber and timber products on the market. In view of the approaching effective date, EU timber trade legislation for com-bating illegal felling was at the forefront of this year’s foreign-trade meeting organised by the foreign-trade unit of the German Timber Trade Federation on 13 April 2012.
