NAHB Housing Rises To 12.1 Percent


Solid gains in both single-family and multifamily housing production resulted in nationwide housing starts rising 12.1 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 954,000 units in December, according to newly released data from the U.S. Commerce Department. This is the highest level of new home production since June of 2008.

Wood Chip Shipments from Uruguay Declines

Thursday, January 17, 2013: Increased reliance on domestic Eucalyptus fiber by Spanish pulp mills has resulted in a dramatic reduction in wood chip shipments from Uruguay, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly. European pulpmills imported much less Eucalyptus chips from Latin America during 2012, mainly because Spanish pulp mills reduced their reliance on relatively costly wood fiber from Uruguay dramatically. Pulp mills in Spain have also paid less for domestic pulp logs the past year, resulting in substantially lower wood fiber costs in 2012 than the previous year.

UPM Reduces Production At Pestovo Sawmill In Russia


UPM announces a production curtailment at its Pestovo sawmill in Russia, and begins negotiations with employees. The negotiations will affect all of the approximately 180 sawmill employees. Starting today, production at the mill will be curtailed to the level necessary to fulfil the on-going contracts. At the same time UPM announces a search for a buyer for the Pestovo mill production area for restructuring or reorientation of production.

Manufacturers and buyers report that negotiations currently in progress on decor-paper prices for deliveries in the first quarter of 2013 are dragging on longer than they have done in previous years. There have been only a few contracts signed so far; most of the negotiations were not concluded until the end of December or the beginning of January.

NAHB Reports Rise In Housing Markets


In the latest sign of a burgeoning recovery in U.S. housing markets, the number of metropolitan areas on the National Association of Home Builders/First American Improving Markets Index (IMI) rose for a fifth consecutive month to 242 in January. This is up from 201 markets listed as improving in December, and includes entrants from 48 states and the District of Columbia.

DLH divests its land To A French Group


DLH had announced on 27 September 2010 that the company had entered into an agreement to sell major land and properties in Belem, Brazil to a big local contracting company. Due to local, juridical circumstances, however, a clean deed of conveyance could not be presented within the period of agreement. Since that time, DLH has been working with the local authorities to obtain a clean deed, as the company said in a press release received by Lesprom Network.
