Stora Enso To Set Up Production Down Under

Finger Jointing Has Higher Rate Of Utilization Due To Brush-Type Feeding Unit

 Over the past months many WEINIG customers in South America have decided to upgrade their modular horizontal finger jointing lines. So far these lines have been fed manually. Given a capacity of up to 120 pieces per minute, a manual feeding process is not continuously possible. Thanks to the so-called WEINIG brush-type feeding unit a finger jointing line can be fed continuously, and the overall performance of the line is thus increased.

Sawnwood Exports Generate Bulk Of First Quarter Earnings

 Ghana exported a total of 64,166 m3 of wood products during the first quarter of 2013 to earn Euro 29.48 million. Compared to exports in the same period in 2012 there was a 4.6% increase in export volumes and a 35% increase in export earnings in the first quarter 2013.

 DOMOTEX Russia has been moved to a new time slot in first half of the year. The second season of Russia’s leading tradeshow for carpets and floor coverings will therefore now be held from 1 to 3 April 2014 instead of 25 to 27 September 2013 as originally planned. Peru Has Made Its Comprehensive Deforestation Data Available To The Public

 The data shows that while more than 100,000 hectares have been cleared in the Peruvian Amazon on annual basis since 2005, the rate of clearing has slowed in recent years. Between 2009 and 2010, some 108,571 ha of forest were lost in the region. Between 2010 and 2011, that number fell to 103,380 ha or 0.16 percent of the Peruvian Amazon's forest cover annually. Overall, more than 78 percent of the area is forested, down from 80 percent or about 63 million hectares in 2000.

African Teak Wood to 'Build' Odisha

 
The growing domestic demand for teak wood has prompted the Odisha Forest Development Corporation (OFDC) to import the timber from Africa in a bid to reduce the pressure on teak forests back home. The corporation, mandated with trading of timber in the State, will import teak wood from Ivory Coast.

The first lot is expected to reach the State by August first week. This is for the first time that timber would be imported from overseas. The corporation has planned to import about 5,000 cubic meter teak wood on an annual basis. In the first consignment, about 400 cubic meter will be purchased from the African nation.

Joint managing directors of the Ireland-based sawmiller Mike and Pat Glennon were presented with the award by sponsors RSM in recognition of the success of the company's export strategy.

Free University Places to Support Timber Industry

 EDINBURGH Napier University is offering free places on a specialist masters degree in a bid to support the UK’s timber industry. Backed by some of the sector’s leading firms, the University is providing at least 13 scholarships on its MSc Timber Engineering – the only course of its kind in the UK – with hopes further sponsored places can be created in the future.

The new initiative is aiming to address a long-acknowledged skills-gap in the sector.

Geoff Rhodes, chair of Edinburgh Napier University’s Forest Product Research Institute advisory board, said: “This has been driven in response to the UK’s lack of training and expertise in timber related technology knowledge linked to structural engineering,

Forest Stewardship Council Launches Smallholder Fund

 The Forest Stewardship Council has launched a fund to support FSC certification among small private, family, and community forest owners, or "smallholders." In the first year, €420,000 will be distributed from the fund.
"Smallholders are a cornerstone of the FSC system," said Kim Carstensen, Director General of FSC International. "This fund is designed to help them - and the forests they manage - benefit from the FSC marketplace".

"We know the benefits of FSC certification for landowners of all sizes, but smallholders face some unique challenges. With relatively modest amounts of support, we can help create new opportunities for these landowners and managers" said Carstensen.

New Stora Enso Division Called Printing And Living

 From 1 July the Finnish timber and paper giant Stora Enso will have a new business division called Printing and Living. The newly created division ensues from the consolidation of the former Printing and Reading division with the Building and Living division. Former chief financial officer (CFO) Karl-Henrik Sundström has been put in charge of this business division. His former tasks are being taken over on an interim basis by former financial director of the group, Jyrki Tammivuori, until a new CFO has been found.

ITTO Project Calls for New Funds for Amazon Forest Monitoring

 The ITTO project on ‘Monitoring deforestation, logging and land use change in the Pan Amazonian Forest – PANAMAZON II’ (RED-PD 029/09 Rev.1 (F); ITTO budget US$ 1,124,784.00) supports the member countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) in improving governance on issues related to logging and land use in the Amazon region, aiming at offering real–time information about extension and quality of the forest cover. The project implementation started in 2011 within the framework of the ITTO Thematic Programme on ‘Reducing deforestation, forest degradation and enhancing environmental services (REDDES), which is financed by Norway, Switzerland, Japan and the USA.

BWF 2013 Joinery State of Trade Survey Q2 launched

 The survey results from the last quarter gave us vital information about the trends within our sector, indicating that joinery manufacturers remain hopeful of bouncing back after a subdued, weather-hit first quarter.

Despite the balance of respondents indicating that sales volumes had decreased, poor weather conditions were thought to be a factor, there is some optimism that volumes will return.

Garnica Buys Veneer Line from Xilofrance

 The Spanish firm Grupo Garnica Plywood has announced the purchase of a veneer line from the insolvency plywood manufacturer Xilofrance. The transaction took place back on 4 April in connection with a final court ruling made in liquidation proceedings involving Xilofrance that began in July 2012. 

The components acquired by Garnica include a peeling line supplied by Raute, a veneer dryer from the German company Grenzebach BSH, and veneer joining systems. Garnica said that the peeling line has a production capacity of a good 80,000 m³ at full speed and allows logs 10 ft long to be peeled. The line will initially be used based on demand.

Sarawak Timber Exports Down 3.2% in 1Q

 Sarawak, Malaysia, timber industry brought in RM7.455 billion ($2.44 billion) to the state in 2012 compared to RM7.085 billion ($2.32billion) in 2011. This 5.2% growth was due to strong demand in markets in the Middle East, South Korea, Singapore, India and Philippines, ITTO reported. 

Sarawak timber exports for the 1Q this year totalled RM1.85 billion ($607 million) a drop of 3.2% compared to last year.

The decline was due to an overall decline in demand except in the case of plywood for which exports increased by 5.4% in the 1Q to RM1.057 billion ($347 million).

Forest and Paper Industry Leaders Discuss the Global Sectors Future

 The sixth biennial international CEOs Roundtable organized by the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations (ICFPA) took place in San Paulo, Brazil, Confederation of European Paper Industries said in a statement. 

More than 50 CEOs and association leaders from around the world met to address issues of common interest, including the consequences of economic pressures on forests from the demand for food, fuel and fiber, the impacts of government policies and programs on the forest products industry, and how to position the industry in its transition for the future.

Mixed Signs of Construction in New Orders

 Construction new orders for the first quarter of 2013, released by the ONS, fell 10% compared to the fourth quarter and were 0.2% lower than the same quarter one year earlier. Although most sectors showed little change, the key differences were a marked rise in private housing orders, offset by a significant fall in infrastructure activity.

Commenting on the ONS figures, Dr Noble Francis, Economics Director at the Construction Products Association said; ‘Recent GDP figures have pointed to signs of growth in the overall economy, but construction has continued to face very challenging conditions with output already 7% lower than a year ago. Today’s new orders figures reflect these continuing difficulties.
